Big Day Productions wedding photography

The Signet Library is a historic weddings venue in Edinburgh, set within the city's celebrated Old Town and defined by its grand Georgian architecture.

The Signet Library is a Georgian masterpiece in the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town, all soaring columns, painted ceilings and serious sense of occasion. An elegant city venue we'd love to shoot a wedding at.

We are completely taken with this place: soaring columns, painted ceilings and a sense of occasion that feels genuinely rare, even by Edinburgh's already impressive standards. As a backdrop for wedding photography and film, the interiors alone offer extraordinary depth, detail and drama. We haven't had the pleasure of shooting here yet, but it is absolutely a venue we hope to one day call familiar.

Getting to The Signet Library

Edinburgh Waverley station is your best bet, sitting just a five minute walk from the Signet Library on Parliament Square. It's well connected from Glasgow, London, and beyond, so train travel is genuinely easy here. Flying in? Edinburgh Airport is around eight miles away. The Airlink 100 bus runs directly into the city centre and is reliable and straightforward. Parking in the Old Town is limited and pricey, so we'd recommend leaving the car at your hotel. The venue is right in the heart of the city, walkable from most central accommodation. For the evening, book taxis in advance. City Cabs and Central Taxis are both trusted local firms worth saving in your phone.

Frequently asked questions about The Signet Library

What is it like to get married at The Signet Library?

Getting married at The Signet Library is a genuinely grand experience, set within one of Edinburgh's most celebrated Georgian interiors. Soaring columns, painted ceilings and a deep sense of history make it feel like a venue with real occasion built into its walls. It is the kind of place where the architecture does a lot of the talking, and couples tend to feel the weight and romance of the setting from the moment they arrive.

How does the interior of The Signet Library work for wedding photography and videography?

A venue like The Signet Library is a photographer's and videographer's dream, with architectural detail, natural light filtering through tall windows and rich textures at every turn. The painted ceilings and classical columns give both stills and moving footage an almost cinematic quality without needing any additional styling. That said, historic venues can also present challenges with mixed or low light in certain areas, so an experienced team who understands how to work with available light is important.

Can we book Big Day Productions to photograph and film our wedding at The Signet Library?

Absolutely, we would love to be considered for a wedding at The Signet Library. It is exactly the kind of historic, characterful venue we are drawn to, and we would approach it with the care and preparation that a space like this deserves. If you are planning your day there, get in touch and we can talk through what coverage would look like for your wedding specifically.

Where is The Signet Library located and is it easy for guests to reach?

The Signet Library sits in the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town, one of the most iconic and well-connected parts of the city. Edinburgh is well served by rail, road and its own airport, making it straightforward for guests travelling from across Scotland and further afield. The central location also means there is no shortage of accommodation options nearby for guests who are making a full weekend of it.

Is The Signet Library suited to both the ceremony and the reception?

The Signet Library is designed to host the full arc of a wedding day, from ceremony through to reception, within a single magnificent setting. Having everything under one roof in a space of this character means the day flows naturally and guests stay immersed in the atmosphere throughout. For photography and film, that continuity is a real advantage as it gives us a consistent, beautiful backdrop across all the key moments.

What style of wedding photography and videography suits The Signet Library best?

The Signet Library lends itself beautifully to a documentary approach that lets the grandeur of the space speak for itself, capturing real moments against an extraordinary backdrop rather than over-directing every shot. That said, the formal architecture also works wonderfully for more composed portraits, giving couples a real range of imagery to choose from. We always tailor our approach to the couple and the venue, and a space like this gives us a lot to work with.
