Questions to Ask Your Wedding Venue
Take the right questions to a viewing before you commit to a venue.
Big Day Productions provides wedding photography, film and content creation. These guides offer planning suggestions; agree the details with your couple, venue and suppliers.
Start with these answers
What should we ask a wedding venue before booking?
Confirm capacity for your actual layout, the full cost, access times, supplier rules and the wet-weather plan. Ask for the answers and inclusions in writing before paying a deposit.
Compare venues using the same guest count, date and requirements. A low hire fee alone does not tell you the total cost of hosting your wedding.
How do we interpret a venue quote?
Ask for an itemised total covering hire, food, drinks, VAT where applicable, service charges, staffing, cleaning and any minimum spend. Identify which items are optional and which are required.
For dry hire, check furniture, toilets, power and catering equipment as well as the room. Read payment, cancellation and price-change terms before committing; ask the venue to clarify anything unclear.
What makes a useful wet-weather plan?
Ask to see the indoor alternative set up for your guest count, not just an empty room. Confirm who decides to move indoors, when that decision is made and whether there is an extra cost.
Check where drinks, portraits and guests will go during any room turnaround. An indoor space that fits the ceremony may not also accommodate dinner or accessible circulation.
How should we check access and timings?
Walk the route from arrival to ceremony, toilets, dining and accommodation with your guests’ needs in mind. Confirm step-free routes, parking, lifts and available assistance directly with the venue.
Give suppliers the permitted arrival, setup and collection times. Ask whether music must stop before the venue closes and whether a sound limiter affects your chosen band or DJ.
What should we ask about photography and film?
Check ceremony shooting positions, indoor portrait options, lighting and any required supplier list. Ask whether your photo and film team can visit or receive a floor plan before the day.
Venue permission alone does not guarantee drone filming: the operator must check safety, airspace and conditions. Ask about microphone access for speeches and agree a plan that works with the venue and celebrant.
